Southampton: Authentic Lebanese food in Hampshire

For an authentic taste of the Middle East, Southampton’s got you covered. It may be surprising, but when it comes to Lebanese cuisine, the area’s thriving restaurant scene really does deliver the goods. This is all very well, but which dishes will make the perfect order…?

A highly recommended starter is warak inab b’zeit. These are more informally known as stuffed vine leaves and the delicate little leaves are just divine. Filled with rice, tomato and onion as well as fresh herbs such as parsley and mint, they are perfect for both vegetarians and meat-eaters and really do make for the perfect appetiser. Of course, baba ghanoush is hard to resist too. The grilled aubergine purée is set off perfectly with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

For a main course the charcoal grill is a great way to go. Lahem meshwi is tender cubes of carefully seasoned lamb that practically melt in the mouth. If you’ve a large appetite though, farrouj meshwi is a boneless baby chicken that is extremely satisfying. A nice vegetarian option is bamieh with rice. This delightful dish consists of okra cooked in a tomato sauce and finished with a hearty sprinkle of coriander.
