22nd March, 2023: Deliveroo celebrates eight years since it delivered its first takeaway in Oxford, and 10 years since it started in the UK. In that time, over 4.8 million takeaway and grocery orders have been placed in Oxford since the launch of its operations in the city.

The food delivery company now boasts over 400 restaurants and stores on its platform in Oxford, over 10 times the number of restaurant partners since its launch in 2015. The longest serving restaurants available to the residents of Oxford are Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Mission Burrito, having been on the platform since day one.

Deliveroo started with only six Oxford riders in 2015, and this number has since grown to over 400 riders in the Oxford area, showcasing Deliveroo’s growth in the city.

Across these eight years, Deliveroo has become a city staple with the top neighbourhood for restaurant orders being East Oxford, which made up over one in ten of every order placed on the app last year. In the second and third spots are Jericho and Walton Manor, and St Ebbes respectively. Vietnamese cuisine has been a consistent favourite for all Oxford orderers over recent years, alongside American, Mexican, Japanese & Thai.

From Covid-19 to the current cost of living crisis, the hospitality industry has faced significant challenges over the previous decade. Through it all, Deliveroo has supported Oxford’s food and drink scene. Following the pandemic, the number of restaurants on the app increased by 50% over 2021, and nearly another 15% in 2022. Showcasing the booming hospitality business in Oxford, orders on the app have more than doubled since January 2020.

Deliveroo Vice President of Regional Growth, Jeff Wemyss said: “We’re incredibly proud to have brought independent restaurant dishes and groceries direct to customers' doors in Oxford for over eight years. As we continue our growth in the city, we’re committed to supporting our fantastic partners and riders over the years ahead.”

Of Oxford’s restaurants available on the app, over half are now small restaurants, as over 220 local businesses have joined the app since its launch in the city. Across Deliveroo’s time in Oxford, they’ve been able to support small businesses such as the top three on the app over the eight years: Taberu, Pan Pan, and Thaikhun, alongside supporting more recent favourites like Sichuan Grand and Sir Suns Wok. Pan Pan, a longstanding Oxford favourite, topped the previous year’s takeaway dishes with their Pad Thai, Korean Fried Chicken and Bao.

Manikandan Veluchamy, owner of Dosa Park said: “We have been on Deliveroo for almost five years now, and the growth we’ve seen in orders as a result has been tremendous - almost 30% year-on-year. Deliveroo takes our business to each and every corner of the city, allowing us to reach new customers in Oxford. The analytics we get back from the platform are vital to help inform our growth strategy too - such as top selling items, customer reviews and ratings. They are an excellent business partner for small businesses like ours looking to expand.”

Alongside helping to cultivate Oxford's impressive food scene, Deliveroo has also rapidly expanded its grocery offering in the city over the past eight years – resulting in grocery orders growing over twelve times higher from the first year of rapid grocery delivery being available in the city. In the past year alone, the number of grocery partners available on the platform has nearly doubled. Data from last month also reveals that the top-selling grocery items in Oxford are staples of milk, bananas, eggs, and easy peeler oranges.
